  • The destruction of the Zaporizhian Sich


    The last Hetman of Ukraine was forced by Empress Catherine II to resign in 1764. In May 1775, General Pyotr Tekeli received direct orders  from Empress Catherine to occupy the main Zaporizhian fortress, the Sich, and to destroy it.  Its political autonomy terminated, the period of Cossack Republic in Ukraine independence history was over. With the liquidation the area was renamed Novorossia.
